Douglas man swims to safety after car plunges into icy reservoir

A 21-year-old Douglas man swam to safety Sunday night after his car plunged into the Whitin Reservoir, police said.

Jeffrey W. Stanhope was driving his 2001 Subaru Legacy on Wallis Street at about 9 p.m. when slick road conditions caused him to lose control of the vehicle, said Douglas Police Chief Patrick T. Foley. Stanhope was able to climb out of the car and swim through the icy water to the shore.

Douglas public safety workers, including the town’s dive team, and firefighters from neighboring Webster responded to the scene. When they arrived, Stanhope was inside a local residence, said Foley. Stanhope was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester and treated for lacerations and mild hypothermia.

He was released later in the evening, Foley said.

The incident will be investigated by Sergeant Gregory Gilbert and Officer Aaron McLaughlin, Foley said.
