Lawrence firefighters battled a five-alarm blaze at the Merrimac Paper Co. on Monday.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said the building was abandoned. He said fire investigators had been called to the scene.

No one was believed to have been in the old mill, which is in a rundown area between the canal and the Merrimack River.

Martin Finucane of the Globe staff contributed to this report.
