Gabriel E. Gomez, the Republican nominee in the June 2013 special election for US Senate, endorsed Republican Charlie Baker for governor Monday night.
Despite having given the maximum contribution allowed under state law, $500, to independent Jeffrey S. McCormick, who is seriously mulling a run for governor, Gomez said Baker was his choice for the Corner Office, citing his public and private sector experience.
“In the end, I’m going to support Charlie Baker. I think he is the right person,” Gomez said in an appearance on NECN’s BroadSide program, adding that he had also donated to Baker.
Still, Gomez lauded McCormick as well.
“Jeff McCormick is a good friend of mine. I’ve known him for over ten years. And I think he’d make a great governor,” Gomez said.
Gomez, a former Navy SEAL and private equity investor, lost a June 2013 against Democrat Edward J. Markey by 10 points.
Gomez recently said he would not run for public office in 2014, planning instead to return to the private sector.
Baker, the 2010 GOP nominee for governor, currently faces Mark R. Fisher, a political novice from Shrewsbury, in the Republican primary.
There are five Democrats and two independent candidates who have also launched gubernatorial bids to succeed Governor Deval Patrick, who has pledged not to run for a third term.Joshua Miller can be reached at email@example.com. Follow him on Twitter @jm_bos.
