Heroin gains a deadly foothold in Vermont

A flood of cheap heroin has thrust Vermont, land of green hills and sweet vistas, into an addiction crisis, a grave threat to younger residents and to a way of life

The percentage of illicit drug use in the past month among 12- to -17-year-olds:

  • Less than 8%
  • 8-8.99%
  • 9-9.99%
  • 10-12.99%
  • 13% or more

Annual averages based on National Survey on Drug Use and Health from 2011 and 2012. Illicit Drugs include marijuana/hashish, cocaine (including crack), heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, or prescription-type psychotherapeutics used nonmedically, including data from original methamphetamine questions but not including new methamphetamine items added in 2005 and 2006.
