Former Providence mayor Buddy Cianci is being treated for what he says is curable cancer. Cianci said Monday that he has been hospitalized for a week at the Miriam Hospital in Providence after being diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer. Joe Paolino, a friend of Cianci and a former mayor himself, said Cianci is in great spirits and was to be released Monday. Cianci, who is in his 70s, is a talk show host at WPRO-AM and a political analyst at WLNE-TV. He plans to be back on air next week and will continue treatment. Cianci was one of the longest-serving mayors in US history, but his legacy was tainted by criminal convictions.
