Warmup expected for weekend, but storm may loom

Winter’s icy grip will loosen in the next few days as temperatures warm up. But don’t put away the shovels just yet. A storm may arrive in the middle of next week, the National Weather Service says.

Today will be sunny and dry, with highs near 28 degrees. Clouds will increase tonight as temperatures fall to the low 20s.

Skies on Friday will be mostly cloudy, with highs near 37 degrees. Some light rain could fall in the evening and into Saturday morning. Lows will drop to near 27 overnight.

“Any precipitation will start in the western part of the state, and it will be minimal,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Charlie Foley.

The weekend will see a big warmup, and the potential for more rain and highs reaching 40 degrees by Saturday afternoon. Temperatures should fall into the mid-30s overnight.

“Saturday night we’ll see the first chance of real rain,” Foley said. “It won’t be heavy, and by midday Sunday, it will be out of here.”

Showers should clear out by 1 p.m. as highs climb into the mid-40s. Skies will clear in the evening, and temperatures will sink back to the upper 20s.

Next week will start off dry and relatively mild, with highs in the mid-30s and partly sunny skies both Monday and Tuesday.

“The beginning of the week is basically partly cloudy and dry, but the weather gets pretty active as we get into Tuesday night and Wednesday,” Foley said. “We do have a chance of rain, snow, and sleet, but that’s still pretty far in advance.”

“A significant storm is growing likely for Wednesday,” the agency said in a forecast discussion posted on the Web, also noting it could have “significant impacts” on the region — and another storm could be waiting in the wings for the next weekend.
