Meet me at Dukakis Station?
Boston residents in the future could be saying something like those words, if a proposal passes in the state Legislature.
The Massachusetts House voted to rename the subway, rail and bus hub South Station in honor of former governor Michael S. Dukakis.
The station would be renamed “The Governor Michael S. Dukakis Transportation Center at South Station” under an amendment passed Wednesday.
“The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority may erect and maintain suitable markers bearing that designation in compliance with the standards of the authority,” the amendment continued.
Dukakis, 80, was governor from 1975 to 1979 and then again from 1983 to 1991. He was the Democratic nominee for president in 1988.
Dukakis was known for taking the Green Line as governor and has long had an interest in public transportation policy.
