Police seize two illegal guns in Roxbury traffic stop

Boston police seized two illegal guns and over 40 grams of crack from a man they arrested on Friday afternoon after a traffic stop in Roxbury, officials said.

Officers were conducting “an ongoing investigation” into drug activity on Ruggles Street near police headquarters when they spotted Eric Christian, 29, getting into a motor vehicle, said a department spokesman.

Police followed the vehicle because Christian was suspected of dealing drugs and carrying weapons, said Officer James Kenneally, the spokesman. He said officers pulled the car over near the corner of Melnea Cass Boulevard and Harrison Avenue after it ran a stop sign.

Police allegedly seized a loaded .45 caliber handgun and a loaded .45 caliber rifle from Christian, as well as the drugs, according to Kenneally.

In a statement, Police Commissioner William B. Evans hailed the arrest.

“This should send a strong message to those who think it’s okay to carry [an illegal] firearm in our city,” Evans said. “If you carry a gun, we’ll find you and bring you to justice.”

Christian faces two counts each of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm with a high-capacity feeding device, as well as trafficking a Class B narcotic, police said.

His arraignment is slated for Monday in Roxbury District Court. It was not known on Friday night if he had hired a lawyer.
