Up to 14 inches of snow expected Wednesday

It’s not over yet.

Today’s snowstorm, which dumped several inches of snow in Southeastern Massachusetts and the Cape, is expected to come to an end this evening.

But another storm is on its way. Expected to arrive early Wednesday morning, it could drop as much as 14 inches on some parts of the state, with 6 to 10 inches in the Boston area, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm could bring “difficult travel conditions” for the Wednesday morning commute, said Nicole Belk, a meteorologist with the weather service.

Weather service snowfall forecast maps showed 10 to 14 inches of snow in Western Massachusetts and in areas of northern Central Massachusetts. Much of the rest of Eastern Massachusetts is shown getting 6 to 10 inches. The amounts predicted taper off towards the south and east with only several inches on the Cape and just a dusting on Nantucket.

In today’s storm, the patterns were reversed. The storm dropped as much as 5 inches of snow on Cape Cod by midafternoon. Areas to the north and west got less snow, rather than more. Boston was spared, with only 0.6 inches recorded early this afternoon at Logan International Airport.

On Tuesday, before the storm arrives, the weather is expected to be dry and sunny, with highs near 36 degrees. Temperatures will drop into the mid-20s as the storm approaches from the lower Mississippi valley.

The storm will arrive in the early hours of Wednesday, dumping snow. In Southeastern Massachusetts, as the day wears on, the snow could change to a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain.

It will be over by Thursday morning, with forecasters predicting a dry ending to the workweek.

“It’s going to be wonderful, but back to cold, with mostly sunny skies Thursday and Friday and highs in the low to upper 20s,” weather service meteorologist Alan Dunham said.
