Salem martial arts instructor faces assault charge

A Salem martial arts instructor charged with beating his girlfriend so severely that her own parents barely recognized her faces a hearing to determine whether he should be granted bail. The Salem News reported that a dangerousness hearing for Joseph Louf, 37, of Salem, was scheduled for Tuesday, a day after he pleaded not guilty to charges including attempted murder and aggravated assault and battery. Police said Louf’s 27-year-old girlfriend suffered ‘‘cauliflower’’ ears, a broken nose, broken teeth, detached retinas, and scars, bruises, and bumps all over her body. She now needs reconstructive surgery. She at first told police the injuries were the result of mixed martial arts fighting.
