Framingham woman charged with not paying $980 cab fare

If you’ve ever wondered how much it costs to take a taxi from New York City to Framingham, the answer is about $1,000.

Framingham resident Denise Rebelato, 31, found that out the hard way Wednesday when she rode in a cab from New York to her home at 21 Wilson Drive, and then told the taxi driver that she could not pay the $980 tab, according to police.

Police said Rebelato flagged down a cabbie in New York and asked for a ride to Framingham. The cab driver told her it would cost at least $850, and possibly about $1,000, said Framingham police Lieutenant Frank DiVittorio.

When Rebelato was dropped off at her home around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, she went inside to get the money, but came back out 10 minutes later and informed the cab driver that she had no cash and that her credit cards would be declined, DiVittorio said.

“She stated that she had a lot of problems, that she just came back from Brazil and she had no idea how she was going to pay the fare,” he said.

The driver allowed her to make a few calls to try and scrounge together the money, but after a few unsuccessful tries, he called police, DiVittorio said.

Rebelato was arrested and charged with larceny over $250. She was arraigned in Framingham District Court Thursday morning, DiVittorio said. She could not be reached for comment on Thursday night.
