Athol woman killed in Route 2 crash Wednesday

A 65-year-old Athol woman was killed and a Holyoke man was seriously injured after the woman lost control of her car on Route 2 in Athol at around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, State Police said.

Gail Peterson was driving a 1998 Dodge Stratus in the eastbound lane when she lost control and crossed over into westbound traffic, hitting the guardrail and coming to rest in the road, according to police. A 58-year-old man traveling west in a 2001 Volvo hit the Stratus on the passenger side, State Police said in a statement.

It was not clear, according to State Police, what caused the woman to lose control of her vehicle.

She was transported to Athol Hospital, where she died. The man was also taken to Athol Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
