Person hit, killed by commuter train in Billerica

A person was hit and killed by an outbound commuter rail train in Billerica this morning, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said.

Pesaturo said the person was a “railroad trespasser.” He was a white man, believed to be in his 20s, said MBTA Transit Police.

The man was walking on Track 1 in near Pond Street in Billerica at about 9:50 a.m., when he was hit by the train. The train was carrying about 26 passengers.

Commuters taking trains on the Lowell Line should expect delays. Shuttle buses from the Lowell and North Billerica stations to Wilmington station are being put in place, said Transit Police.

Transit Police detectives and representatives from the Middlesex district attorney’s office will investigate the incident, Transit Police said.
