Aaron Hernandez and inmate clash in jail

Aaron Hernandez fought another inmate Tuesday at the North Dartmouth jail where the former New England Patriots player is being held as he awaits trial on murder and weapons charges, an official said.

Bernie Sullivan, a spokesman for the Bristol County sheriff’s office, confirmed that Hernandez “was involved in an altercation with another inmate” at the Bristol County House of Correction and Jail.

“Neither [man] was seriously injured,” Sullivan said. He declined to comment further, citing an ongoing investigation into the incident.

It was not clear if Hernandez, 24, will face criminal charges in the alleged fight, which Sullivan said occurred in a special unit where the former Patriot is being held with a small number of other inmates.

A spokesman for the Bristol district attorney’s office declined to comment Tuesday, and Hernandez’s lawyers did not respond to inquiries.

Hernandez is charged with murder and weapons violations in the June slaying of Odin L. Lloyd, 27, of Dorchester, whose bullet-riddled body was found near Hernandez’s large North Attleborough home. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.

His lawyers have repeatedly described the case against him as weak and say they expect him to be cleared.

Hernandez is also being investigated for possible involvement in a July 2012 double homicide outside a nightclub in Boston’s South End, but no charges have been brought in that case. His next court appearance is slated for June 16.
