Traffic will be redirected and lanes will be closed this weekend on the Massachusetts Turnpike in downtown Boston as transportation officials test upcoming changes necessary for a Prudential Tunnel construction project.
Only one lane will be open to traffic in each direction of Interstate 90 for about two miles from 9 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday for the traffic pattern test. Some entrance and exit ramps will be closed in the Back Bay area during the test, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said.
The same changes will be implemented on the last two weekends in March and the first two weekends in April while construction work is under way, the transportation department said in a statement.
State Police and transportation officials will redirect traffic, change signal times, restrict parking, and enforce detours during those four weekends. Driving during the week will be normal, said the statement.
Travelers are encouraged to take public transportation, seek alternate routes, and allow extra time during this period.
