Cement truck crashes in Prudential Tunnel

One person was injured when a concrete truck crashed through a wall inside the Prudential Tunnel Friday morning, authorities said.

Boston emergency medical workers, Boston firefighters, and State Police responded, and workers cleaned up leaking diesel fuel. The eastbound side of the tunnel was closed temporarily, State Police said.

The truck crashed into the side of the tunnel, breaking through the side wall, and overturned, State Police said.

A State Police dispatcher was not sure of the extent of the damage to the tunnel’s wall. A photo State Police posted on Twitter showed daylight streaming in from a large hole in the tunnel wall, with the overturned truck next to it, concrete spilled out of the back.

A full inspection of the crash site was to be performed before the tunnel reopened, the Department of Transportation said.

EMS workers treated the injured person at the scene. It was not immediately clear whether that person would be taken to a hospital, said Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald.

Exit 22 off Interstate 90 eastbound was also closed. The Department of Transportation tweeted at about 7:20 p.m. that Exit 22 had been reopened to traffic.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

A construction project scheduled to begin at 9 p.m., which requires closing the westbound side of the tunnel, was not expected to be affected, and the truck was removed, the Department of Transportation said.
