March going out with a rainstorm

Spring weather has finally arrived — and that means rain.

After a possible sprinkling today, New England will be doused with 2 to 4 inches of heavy rain this weekend, potentially causing urban flooding in some areas, forecasters said.

“It’s going to be a good, soaking rain that could cause some ponding on the roads and flooding of small streams,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Charlie Foley. “We’re going to see perhaps some steady rain this afternoon, but the bulk of heavy rain will be late Saturday into Sunday.”

Once the rain clears out of the region, weather should become dry and warmer, with high temperatures near 50 degrees through late next week.

Today will start out slightly cloudy but relatively warm, with highs reaching 55 degrees. There is a chance of rain showers between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. Skies will become mostly cloudy in the evening as temperatures drop into the mid-40s.

The weekend will start deceptively dry, with the deluge of rain not beginning until after noon. High temperatures should crest near 52 degrees before dropping to 38 degrees in the evening. Light rain should begin falling after 1 p.m., becoming heavier during the evening. The rain should continue overnight, with temperatures around 38 degrees.

The rain will continue Sunday, with high temperatures cresting near 43 degrees. Showers should continue through the evening and overnight as temperatures sink into the lower 30s.

Showers should transition to sleet and rain between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. Monday before the storm clears out of the region. Conditions will become dry and warmer through late next week, with highs in the mid- to upper 40s and lows above 35 degrees, forecasters said.
