MBTA’s late-night service makes smooth debut

After months of anticipation, MBTA riders celebrated the system’s new extended hours this weekend with enthusiastic cheers — and were largely well-behaved.

MBTA Transit Police made no arrests Friday or Saturday night, T spokesman Joe Pesaturo said today. All of the system’s subway lines and trolley lines, in addition to the 15 most popular bus routes, stayed open until 3 a.m., with the last trains departing the heart of the city around 2:30 a.m.

Transportation officials and local leaders have warned that the one-year pilot for extended weekend hours is a “use-it-or-lose-it” deal, though they have not released any criteria or benchmarks for the service to be deemed a success.

T staff are currently working on ridership figures from the debut weekend, Pesaturo said.

On Friday and Saturday night, T passengers took to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to celebrate the new extended hours, posting photos of the subway station countdown clocks displaying the late hour: 1:43, 1:55, 2:05.

“Yes,” commented one passenger, “that’s 1:17AM.”
