Winthrop police say they will seek a criminal complaint against a 22-year-old Winthrop man accused of providing alcohol to minors in a Feb. 28 incident involving the town’s high school hockey team.
The man attended Winthrop High, but is not a school employee nor is he connected with the team, Police Chief Terence Delehanty said Monday in a statement.
The coaching staff has been cleared of any wrongdoing, the statement said.
Police said interviews showed that Dale Dunbar, the coach, and Michael Norris and Matthew Driscoll, assistant coaches, were in the coaches’ locker room at the time the 22-year-old brought the alcohol to the players’ locker room.
The coaches “did not procure the alcohol and were not aware of its presence” until police arrived around 11:40 that night, the statement said.
The players will not face criminal charges, but will face discipline by the school, the statement said.
Police said they would ask a clerk-magistrate to find that there is probable cause to issue the charges.
The monthlong investigation included multiple interviews and video evidence from the town’s middle school, where the locker rooms are located, and a liquor store.
