Anti-Semitic incidents rose in Mass. in 2013, report says

Reports of anti-Semitic incidents increased by 21 percent last year in Massachusetts, despite a national decline, according to an annual survey released today by the Anti-Defamation League.

The number of reported incidents in Masschusetts increased from 38 in 2012 to 46 in 2013.

More than a quarter of the incidents were reported on schools and college campuses. Those included a Carver middle school student being called a “stinking Jew” by a classmate, and a swastika drawn on the door of a Jewish college student’s dorm room in Boston, the league said in a statement.

“This year’s audit provides an alarming snapshot into anti-Semitic acts at Massachusetts schools,” said Robert Trestan, the league’s New England regional director, in a statement. “The audit and headlines in local newspapers confirm that students of all ages and levels continue to be targeted because of their religion.”

Reports of anti-Semitic incidents declined nationally in 2013 by 19 percent, down to 751 in 2013 from 927 in 2012, according to the survey.

The league’s survey was compiled using information provided by victims, law enforcement officials, and community leaders, the statement said. Incidents reported included acts of vandalism, harassment, and intimidation against Jewish individuals and institutions.
