Police recover firearm near schools in South Boston

Boston police today recovered a firearm near the South Boston Educational Complex, located next to Thomas Park in South Boston, officials said.

The complex houses Excel High School and the Boston Green Academy, both of which went into safe mode after the firearm was found near the building at 95 G. St. around 8:30 a.m., said Boston public schools spokesman Brian Ballou.

The schools returned to regular schedule about an hour later, he said.

Ballou said the gun was found in the park, and not on school grounds.
