Springfield’s incoming police commissioner is vowing to make the department more proactive when it comes to crime. On Monday night, John Barbieri told a crowd of more than 300 residents at his first public meeting that to do so he needs the community’s help to crack down on crime. The meeting came after a weekend in which there were five shootings in the city. Barbieri takes over from William Fitchet as commissioner on June 1. At the meeting, Barbieri laid out a plan that includes improved response times, clearly defined responsibility for line supervisors, improved community relations, and an internal analysis of emergency responses.
