Woman assaulted after leaving Porter Square Station

A woman reported being sexually assaulted in Cambridge as she was walking alone on Richdale Avenue early today, officials said.

The woman had left the MBTA Porter Square station and was walking alone shortly after midnight when a man “wearing all dark clothing” attempted to sexually assault her, according to Jeremy Warnick, a Cambridge police spokesman.

The victim was able to fend off the attacker and escape. She reported to Cambridge Police Department shortly after midnight to report the assault, Warnick said.

Cambridge police sent a citizen alert to residents in the Porter Square area about the incident this morning, and included several precautions to take should one be walking alone at night.

Police are investigating if the attempted attack is connected to two similar attacks reported in the Porter Square area in January.

“We’re very much aware of the history there, and trying to see if there’s any connection is also a piece of our investigation,” Warnick said.

Cambridge police are investigating the attack, and urge anyone with information to call detectives at 617-349-3370.
