Baker gets state GOP endorsement

Gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker won the endorsement of the state Republican Party on Saturday after the 20-member executive committee took the unusual step of endorsement by conference call. Without such a vote, the party would have been prohibited by its bylaws from supporting Baker’s candidacy, because he is facing a fellow Republican on the primary ballot. Baker was endorsed at the party’s March convention when a majority of delegates backed him over Tea Party challenger Mark R. Fisher, who was disqualified from running after GOP leaders said he had failed to win the required support of 15 percent of delegates. However, Fisher disputed the vote in court, arguing he had been unfairly kept off the ballot, and GOP leaders agreed to put Fisher’s name on the ballot to avoid the cost and distraction of a continued lawsuit.
