New England Aquarium
This May, humpback whales have been abundant near Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary, about 25 miles east of Boston and just north of the tip of Cape Cod.
“The past few weeks have been exceptional,” said Laura Howes, who runs the new England Aquarium’s whale watch program.
An eel-like fish called sand lance appears to be drawing sharks, seals, and the whales, who gobble them up by the ton.
Humpback whales, which are about the length of a school bus and weigh 40 tons, use teamwork to round up the tiny prey.
