Mysterious slick spotted on Mystic River

State environmental officials are investigating a small but mysterious sheen of petroleum spotted Saturday evening on the Mystic River. A spokesman for the Department of Environmental Protection said the slick had begun to dissipate on its own around 6:30 p.m., just over an hour after it was first reported by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Joe Ferson said there is no threat to the environment or public health, but the department does not know the source of the fuel and is concerned more could spill. The substance, which officials believe is some sort of petroleum, extended a short distance down the river between Charlestown, Everett, and Medford, Ferson said.
