The arm of the Republican Party devoted to winning seats in the US House of Representatives has reserved more than $2 million of television time in the Boston market this fall, an indication it plans to actively support at least one Republican challenger in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
The National Republican Congressional Committee has booked $2.2 million of time for television advertisements on Boston broadcast and cable television, according to a committee official. That money could be used to target Massachusetts US Representative John Tierney and/or New Hampshire US Representatives Ann McLane Kuster and Carol Shea-Porter, all Democrats.
The official said decisions on allocations within the media market — which covers all of Tierney’s North Shore-anchored district and much of southern New Hampshire — have not yet been made, nor have the dates of the reservations been publicly released.
The reservation is part of a more than $30 million national TV effort, which was earlier reported by Politico.
While the reservations are not ironclad, they do offer a template for how the group plans to spend its resources.
Republicans see Tierney as the most vulnerable Democrat in Massachusetts. He faces a challenge from Republican Richard Tisei, who lost to him by one percentage point in the 2012. Tierney also faces a primary challenge from former Marine Seth Moulton, immigration attorney Marisa DeFranco and other Democrats.
The arm of the Democratic Party devoted to winning US House elections made a TV reservation of its own, announced last month, devoted to backing Tierney.
In New Hampshire, national political analysts see Shea-Porter as more vulnerable than Kuster.
Shea-Porter was first elected in 2006, lost re-election in 2010, but won back her seat in 2012. Kuster lost a bid for Congress in 2010, but won in 2012.
