An employee at Kettle Cuisine, a nearby restaurant, said she saw thick black smoke pouring from the building. She said the fire had raged since about 3 p.m.

Archer said a “squatter” who had allegedly been living in the building was rushed to the hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Commercial Street was shut down, while crews battled the fire, according to a tweet from the State Police.

Archer said the fire had been knocked down as of 5:30 p.m.

No further information was immediately available.
