Man hit in chest by mortar-style firework on Cape

A 47-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck in the chest by a mortar-style firework in the Cape Cod village of Dennis Port on Thursday night, a fire official said.

The Dennis Fire Department responded to Chase’s Ocean Grove cottage colony at about 10 p.m., said Deputy Fire Chief Robert Brown.

The man, whose name was not released by officials, suffered life-threatening first- and second-degree burns to 60 percent of his body, Brown said. He was taken to Cape Cod Hospital and later transferred by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital.

An MGH official said the man is in serious condition.

Brown said the firework was part of a private display. He did not know how the man was struck, but said officials believed it happened by accident.

Fireworks are illegal under Massachusetts state law. But no one has been charged in the case, Brown said. The accident is under investigation by the fire department.
