Woman struck, killed by vehicle in Dorchester

A woman was killed after she was struck by a vehicle early Saturday morning in Dorchester’s Lower Mills section, according to Boston police.

The 32-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was struck at 4 River St., near the Washington Street intersection, around 5:15 a.m., said Officer Rachel McGuire, a spokeswoman for Boston police.

The victim was taken to Carney Hospital and died of her injuries at the hospital, McGuire said. She said the incident is not considered a hit and run.

A man who identified himself as the victim’s landlord but declined to give his name said she lived in an apartment building at Washington Street and Tanglewood Road, one block from the accident scene.

“She was a very nice person,” he said. “She’ll be missed.”

He said she had been his tenant for four or five years, first renting just a room but in recent weeks moving into her own apartment. He believed she was on her way to work when she was struck.

The landlord said the victim had immigrated to the United States from Kenya for access to greater opportunities and hoped to bring her young son from Africa to live with her.

“She worked very hard to make everything happen, and those plans got cut short,” he said.

He said the victim was a good tenant who worked long hours and mostly kept to herself. “She was just quiet,” he said. “She worked a lot. ... Once you work all day, the best thing you want to do is go to bed.”

The incident is under investigation.
