Judge delays decision on UMass rape trial

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — A judge has delayed a hearing on the prosecution’s request to have four men charged with raping a University of Massachusetts freshman in her Amherst dorm room in 2012 tried together to give defense lawyers more time.

Statements to police made by the suspects need to be transcribed and portions redacted so defense attorneys can decide if they oppose joining the cases together.

A Hampshire Superior Court judge Wednesday set a Sept. 17 deadline for motions opposing joining the cases, with a Sept. 24 hearing to hear arguments on the matter.

Prosecutors want one trial, in part, to avoid having to convene four juries and recall the same witnesses four times.

The suspects were not UMass students, but knew the woman. Their lawyers say the sex was consensual.
