O’Neill Tunnel set to close for repairs Tuesday night

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is warning drivers of an overnight closure of the southbound side of the Thomas P. O’Neill Jr. Tunnel on Interstate 93 that is set for next week.

Beginning at 11 p.m. Tuesday, MassDOT will close the tunnel in the southbound direction through Boston overnight into Wednesday for maintenance work, the state agency said in a statement.

A detour will lead I-93 southbound traffic to the Mystic offramp at Exit 28. Following the offramp, traffic will then be directed through Sullivan Square to Rutherford Avenue, through the southbound side of the Surface Artery.

Southbound traffic will be able to reenter I-93 at the onramp at Albany Street and Herald Street.

“MassDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize delays,” according to the statement. “Those traveling through the area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution while traveling along the detour routes.”
