Four people injured in crash on Meridian Street bridge

Four people were injured and had to be extricated from the wreckage using the Jaws-of-Life after a taxicab and a small pickup truck crashed on the Meridian Street Bridge Wednesday morning, officials said.

The two vehicles collided around 11 a.m. on the drawbridge, which connects East Boston and Chelsea, said Steve MacDonald, spokesman for the Boston Fire Department.

The cab was carrying two passengers, a grandfather and a 12-year-old boy, along with the driver, MacDonald said. He did not know what company the cab belonged to.

The driver was the only occupant of the small pickup truck, MacDonald said.

The cab and the pickup truck were both so badly damaged that rescue crews had to use hydraulic rescue tools to extricate all the victims, MacDonald said.

All four were transported to area hospitals — two to Massachusetts General Hospital and two to Tufts Medical Center, MacDonald said.

MacDonald did not know the extent of the victims’ injuries.

The Meridian Street Bridge, also known as the Andrew McArdle Bridge, is a popular route for many East Boston and Chelsea residents.

A woman crossing the bridge was crushed to death last December after she clung to one of the two plates of the bridge, which then closed on top of her, the Globe reported at the time.
