Police recover illegal gun in East Boston

Boston police recovered an illegal firearm from an ex-convict who was driving with a child in his car in East Boston Wednesday evening, police said.

Officers were on patrol in the Eagle Hill area at about 6 p.m. when they noticed a man matching the description of a possible drug dealer sitting in a running car with the headlights on, partially blocking a lane of traffic. The officers watched as a second man came from a Brooks Street residence and exchanged something with the man in the car through the passenger side window.

When the man in the car drove away toward Prescott Street, police followed and pulled him over. After the suspect twice reached for his pants pocket, the officers removed him from the vehicle, patted him down, and found a loaded .40-caliber firearm and a small bag of what they believed to be marijuana in his pants pocket, police said in a statement posted on the department’s blog.

The officers then discovered a child in a car seat in the vehicle. The child was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for evaluation. The child’s mother and the Department of Children and Families were notified.

Robert L. Horsley, 35, of Quincy was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and being an armed career criminal (Level 2), among other charges. He was to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court Thursday, but did not show up.
