Last winter, Globe reporter Billy Baker interviewed his father, a lifelong South Boston resident, about the unofficial rules involved when shoveling out a spot and using a space-saver in the city.
In light of the fact that Boston and the state are now dealing with a historic amount of the snow, we decided to revisit those rules.
To keep things in perspective, the winter of 2014-2015 has vaulted into the top 3 snowiest seasons in Boston’s recorded history, according to the National Weather Service, with 95.7 inches.
February is also now Boston’s snowiest month on record, with 58.5 inches, besting by more than 15 inches the previous record set in January 2005.

Baker has also reported on the South End’s movement to eliminate space savers, and the fact that despite that neighborhood’s best efforts, the practice continues.
