State to hold 5 forums on dropping MCAS exams

The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will host five forums on whether to replace the MCAS exams with a new computer-based assessment system that many school districts are trying out this spring.

The first forum will be held at Fitchburg State University on April 28 at 3 p.m. The other forums will start at 4 p.m. and will take place at Bunker Hill Community College on May 18, Bridgewater State University on June 10, North Shore Community College’s Lynn Campus on June 22, and Springfield Technical Community College on July 7.

More details about the forums can be found on the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s website.

The state education board is expected to decide this fall whether to retire the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System exams in English and math and replace them with the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers tests. If the board adopts the change, the state would continue using the MCAS for science exams.
