Business groups lobby in favor of Baker’s MBTA plan

A collection of business groups and elected officials billing themselves as the Coalition for World Class Public Transit System will hold a news conference at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to launch an online petition backing Governor Charlie Baker’s plan to overhaul the MBTA.

The Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, a business-backed budget watchdog, and the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce will be among the groups in attendance, according to organizers.

Mayors from Braintree, Melrose, and Haverhill are also expected.

Baker has faced some resistance to his plan, which includes a fiscal control board to temporarily oversee the T, in the state Senate.
