Power restored after thousands affected by outages

Power has been restored to thousands of residents who experienced outages Friday morning in Everett, Malden, Medford, and Melrose, officials said.

National Grid’s website reported that more than 45,000 customers were affected at one point by the outages.

As of 8 a.m., power had been restored to most people, National Grid spokeswoman Mary-Leah Assad said. Only 3,000 customers in Everett remained without service, and “we hope to have them restored as soon as possible,” she said.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency released a different number, saying 13,039 customers were still without power at 8:30 a.m.

While the cause of the outage is under investigation, Assad said, officials suspect that the issue, which was first reported at 7 a.m., originated at a substation in Everett. She did not know if it was related to severe thunderstorms that boomed across the region Thursday.

MEMA said the outages appeared to have been caused by a fault on a transmission line that feeds the area. Full service restoration is expected by 1 p.m., the agency said.

The outages also affected the morning commute on the Orange Line north of Boston.

MassDOT spokesman Michael Verseckes said the outage affected T service between Wellington and Assembly stations from about 6:50 a.m. until about 7:25 a.m., at which time power was restored.

Delays will continue to plague the Orange Line through the morning commute, Verseckes said.
