An Ayer man was arrested after a hit-and-run crash in Worcester that left a woman dead and a man critically injured Saturday night, police said.
Officers were dispatched to Lincoln Street at about 6:57 p.m. after a motor vehicle and pedestrian accident was reported, Worcester police said. Upon arrival, officers discovered both victims lying in the road.
They were taken to a nearby hospital, where the woman, a 48-year-old Worcester resident, died a short time later. The man, 46 and also of Worcester, was in critical condition, police said. Their names were not released.
According to witnesses, both were struck by a dark-colored vehicle as they were standing by a parked vehicle in front of 128 Lincoln St., police said.

Police arrested Daniel Depew, 29, of Ayer, after campus police at Worcester Polytechnic Institute observed him driving without headlights and striking a plastic pylon at about 7:26 p.m., police said.
A Worcester police officer working a private detail for WPI was able to match Depew’s black Dodge Charger to a vehicle that fled the scene of an accident earlier that evening, police said. After he was stopped Depew showed signs of being intoxicated.
Depew is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at Worcester District Court on charges of failure to stay within marked lanes, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, failure to slow for a pedestrian in a roadway, leaving the scene of a personal injury, leaving the scene of a personal injury resulting in death, two counts of leaving the scene of property damage, operating under the influence of alcohol (third offense), operating under the influence of alcohol involving motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence of alcohol involving serious personal injury, red-light violation and possession of an open container of alcohol.
