Boy burned at Sandwich motel is flown to Boston hospital

A spilled cup of hot cocoa left an 8-year-old boy with burns severe enough to require an emergency helicopter trip from a Sandwich motel to a Boston hospital Saturday morning.

The boy, who was a guest at the Sandwich Motor Lodge and Resort, suffered second-degree burns over his pelvic area because of the spilled drink, according to the Sandwich Fire Department.

Sandwich police said the boy’s burns were the result of an accident.

Firefighters, police, and paramedics arrived at the scene at 9:13 a.m., where crews treated the boy.

He was taken by ambulance from the motel to the Oak Ridge School, where a MedFlight helicopter transported him to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for further treatment, according to the fire department.
