The crew of a freighter found a missing boater alive on a life raft about 100 nautical miles from shore on Sunday, more than a week after his vessel had failed to return to port in Point Judith, R.I., according to the US Coast Guard.

Nathan Carman, 22, was found about 100 nautical miles from shore in good condition, said Coast Guard spokeswoman Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicole Groll. She did not have specifics about where he was found.

Nathan and his mother, Linda, had gone missing Sept. 17 after an offshore fishing trip in Nathan’s 32-foot center console boat, which is called the Chicken Pox and left from Ram’s Point Marina in Point Judith. Linda Carman, 54, is still missing.

The Chicken Pox sank after taking on water, Groll said Monday.

The Coast Guard had suspended the search for the mother and son on Friday, after scouring 62,000 square nautical miles.

The freighter with Nathan Carman aboard is expected to dock on Tuesday, although Groll said she doesn’t know yet where the ship is heading.
