Officers on patrol at about 1:43 a.m. Saturday heard gunshots in the area of Erie and Ellington Streets, Boston police said in a statement. The officers saw a man quickly walking away while clutching his waistband, leading them to believe he had a firearm.

Police said when Anthony Tabb, of Brockton, saw the officers, he began to run away. Officers then chased him for several blocks until he disappeared into 11 Fowler St.

A Boston police K-9, named Duke, found Tabb hiding underneath a ladder and officers were able to arrest him, police said.

A second dog, named Boomer, traced Tabb’s steps and found a loaded .40-caliber Smith & Wesson SD40 VE handgun, police said.

Tabb will appear in Dorchester District Court on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest, police said. Police said he could face weapons charges later.
