HUBweek gets underway with a debate of its own

Harvard Professor Michael Sandel (right), pictured speaking at last year’s “Faneuil Forum,” will return Monday to host the HUBweek event.Aram Boghosian

Just before the first presidential debate, a prominent philosopher will lead an even more high-minded discussion at Faneuil Hall, asking: Is it fair to tax the rich to help the poor? And should rich countries have the right to restrict immigration?

The Faneuil Hall debate is part of the second year of HUBweek, a festival devoted to the arts, science, and technology that is aiming to become Boston’s answer to South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. This year’s events run through Oct. 1 at a variety of venues.

The festival is sponsored by The Boston Globe, Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
