Wareham teen thrown from car after police pursuit

A Wareham teenager was seriously injured in a car crash early Saturday after allegedly sideswiping a car and fleeing the scene, according to police.

The 17-year-old male driver allegedly sideswiped the car on Glen Charlie Road in East Wareham while driving erratically, then fled onto onto several major highways while the other motorist followed him and alerted police, according to a statement by Wareham police.

Police spotted the driver, whose name has not been released, driving at a high rate of speed with his lights off and learned that he might be a local 17-year-old whose license was suspended, according to police.

Police Sergeant Michael Smith called off the pursuit, then seconds later found the the car, which had skidded off County Road and hit several trees. The teenager was found lying injured on the roadway. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. Police said the teenager was alone in the car at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
