Missing woman found dead in R.I. recreational area

A 59-year-old woman from Coventry, R.I., was found dead in a thicket Sunday afternoon after being missing for almost a week, police said.

Patti Pendleton went missing Nov. 28 while hiking in the Arcadia Management Area — a 14,000-acre recreational area in Rhode Island — with her two dogs.

Coventry police said that she likely died from exposure, but officials will do an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Officials stopped their search for Pendleton on Friday.

Police said Pendleton was found in a section of the Arcadia Management Area near the Connecticut border known as Cat Swamp, which is “extremely difficult to access.” Officials had to use chainsaws and other brush clearing equipment to get into the area.

Pendleton was found at about 1 p.m. on Sunday. Her dogs were alive and nearby, and the pets were taken to a nearby veterinarian.
