A rainy morning will be followed by a mostly calm Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

Northwest of the city, the precipitation during the morning rush hour is a slushy mix of rain and snow, creating less-than-perfect driving conditions, forecasters wrote.

“This morning, give yourself extra time to travel, take it slow, and give yourself distance between other cars,’’ forecasters urged drivers. “Messy commute this morning.’’

The rainy and snowy mix is expected to last into mid-morning before fading away, to be followed by a warmer than usual December day. Temperatures in Greater Boston will peak in the low 40s, forecasters wrote.

Overnight temperatures will stay above freezing in Greater Boston and climb back into the 40s Thursday when some precipitation is expected.

But the warmish weather will be replaced starting Thursday by a cold wave that will last into the weekend, and possibly bring some snow to the region, forecasters said. Winds will also increase with gusts of up to 30 miles per hour expected by Friday.
