Two die in Route 44 crash in Plymouth

Two women were killed on Route 44 in Plymouth Wednesday night when the 2001 Jeep Wrangler they were riding in careened across the highway, crossed a median and then rolled over before coming to a stop near the Cherry Street ramp.

Montana Hurley, 20, of Sagamore Beach, was pronounced dead on the scene, and Kristina McCarthy, 26, of Kingston, was rushed to a Plymouth hospital where she later died from her injuries, according to State Police

According to State Police, the women were traveling from Cherry Street in Plymouth onto Route 44 eastbound around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. At that point, the driver lost control of the vehicle.

“The Jeep travelled across both eastbound lanes, through a grass median area, and entered the westbound side of Route 44,’’ State Police spokesman David Procopio wrote in an e-mail. “The Jeep then rolled over into the infield next to the off ramp from Route 44 westbound to Cherry Street, preliminary investigation suggests. The Jeep came to rest on that ramp.’’

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
