Wellfleet restaurant fire ‘quickly extinguished’ by Cape crews

A fire inside a Wellfleet restaurant famous for its barbecue was quickly put out Monday morning in time for the restaurant to open as usual, officials said.

Staffers at Russ & Marie’s Marconi Beach BBQ & Seafood Restaurant noticed smoke that was not part of the restaurant’s barbeque recipe and contacted the Wellfleet Fire Department around 7:45 a.m., the department said in a release.

The restaurant is on Route 6 near the Marconi Beach in the Cape Cod National Seashore and was identified by the Globe as one of the Cape’s top eateries in 2016.

Wellfleet Fire Chief Richard J. Pauley Jr. said in a statement that firefighters learned that the fire was in attic area of the restaurant, and were able to cut through the roof to quickly bring the fire under control.

“First arriving personnel made a coordinating attack of opening up the roof and limiting interior damage to the building,” Pauley said in the release, crediting Eastham and Wellfleet crews arriving first.

The fire only left damage in the attic, with minor smoke and water damage on the first floor of the restaurant.

Pauley also credited restaurant staff for quickly noticing the fire and calling it in.

Pauley said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but that it appeared to be accidental.
