Racist graffiti was found in two boys’ bathrooms at Needham High School during the past month, according to a letter sent Tuesday from the school’s principal.

In early November, the “N word” was found scrawled on a wall. The second instance, which included the “N word with an ‘a’ ending,” was discovered Monday, principal Aaron Sicotte wrote in the letter.

Sicotte called the graffiti “unacceptable,” writing, “When racist slurs are written on our walls, we are not a safe place.”

The handwriting was different in the two instances, he said.

The school’s administration is investigating and is seeking help from the public. The school does not yet know who was behind the racist graffiti.

“I want to be clear that racist slurs — or any language that demeans or degrades others — have no place in Needham High School or anywhere in the Needham Public Schools,” he said in the letter.

Sicotte indicated that one in five students in Needham are students of color.

“We are an increasingly diverse community in an increasingly diverse country,” he said. “We need to embrace and celebrate that reality, not hide from it or fear it.”

Messages left with the high school administration and Needham police were not immediately returned late Tuesday afternoon.

“I am confident that hateful language written on our walls does not represent the values of the vast majority of students or the broader Needham community,” Sicotte wrote.
