An elderly man crashed a Toyota SUV into the front of Benny’s Barber Shop in Marlborough Tuesday afternoon, shattering the front window glass but leaving no injuries, officials said.
“There’s quite a bit of damage out there,” Marlborough police Sergeant John Graham said. “The car went through the barber shop.”
The driver was examined by EMS at the scene but refused medical treatment, Marlborough Assistant fire Chief Jeffrey Gogan said. The owner of the barbershop, Benny, was the only person in the shop at the time and was in a back room when the crash occurred at 2:05 p.m. No serious injuries were reported.
“[The shop] doesn’t look very good,” said David Greenhalgh, owner of The Plum Tomato, a pizza shop across the street. “The entire front of the store is just open now. It’s pretty ugly.”
Police are still looking into the cause of the crash. Gogan said there is “significant structural damage to the building.”
The barbershop is located in a three-store strip mall at 554 Boston Post Road East, sandwiched between convenience store Capital Farms and Post Road Pizza.
Greenhalgh, who had initially brought Benny a pizza to welcome him to the neighborhood, said the barber shop is fairly new, opening its doors just three or four months ago. The store had been empty for a long time before the barbershop moved in, he said.
“I see some people there from time to time,” Greenhalgh said. “I think he was just starting to ramp up his business, grow his business.”
Greenhalgh said he does worry about cars crashing into storefronts, referring to a March 2016 fatal car crash into Newton’s Sweet Tomatoes pizza parlor.
“You see it more and more often with older people still driving and getting confused and hitting the gas instead of the brake,” Greenhalgh said.Elise Takahama can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow her on Twitter @elisetakahama.
